Canadian Dowson Goes Wire-to-Wire in Thrilling 2026 KFNW Season Opener
The Snake River Manufacturing Kayak Fishing Northwest Tournament Series, presented by Diamond Parking & Self Storage, kicked off its 2026 season at Potholes Reservoir — and it delivered from the first cast to the last.
After a brutal practice day battered by cold winds, tournament day dawned to bluebird skies and light winds — and the bass responded in kind. Seventy-four anglers took to the water, and what unfolded over eight hours was one of the most competitive and drama-filled days the tour has seen in recent memory.
First Blood and Early Fireworks
The action started fast. Geoff Linson (Shelton, WA) drew first blood at 5:48 AM with a 15.50-inch largemouth, and just two minutes later Rick Kelly (Grants Pass, OR) fired back with a 17.25-inch fish to briefly top the early leaderboard. By 6:54 AM, Brian Oles (Kennewick, WA) had posted a 19-inch largemouth — the biggest submitted fish of the morning — while defending Angler of the Year Brandon Hua (Hillsboro, OR) announced himself at 6:33 AM with a fat 18.75-inch largemouth, signaling from the start that the reigning champion had come to compete.
Dowson Makes His Move
The morning’s first seismic shift came at 7:27 AM, when Hayden Dowson (Osoyoos, BC) uploaded five largemouth at once — 18.25, 18, 17.5, 16, and 13.5 inches — for an early total of 83.25 inches, vaulting straight to the top of the leaderboard. By 8:28 AM, ten anglers had already filled their five-fish limits.
Then came a moment that had the whole field buzzing. While the first live update video was being recorded, Chris Williams (Olympia, WA) quietly dropped what may be the most jaw-dropping performance of the day — five largemouth ranging from 15.50 to 17.75 inches, all caught in a blistering 14-minute window between 6:39 and 6:53 AM. His bag rocketed him to the top of the board. The fish were already in the boat — he’d just been waiting to submit.
Dowson was not about to go quietly. At 9:28 AM, he fired back with a 19.50-inch largemouth — the largest fish in the tournament — autocuIling his smallest and surging to 89.25 inches to reclaim the lead. He added one final cull later in the day, a 17-incher to replace his 13.5, pushing his total to 90.25 inches and locking up the victory.
The Battle Behind Dowson
The battle behind Dowson was relentless. Brandon Hua methodically built his bag all day and turned it on in the final hour, including a clutch 17.5-inch cull that pushed him to 86.50 inches and secured second place — a strong result for the defending AOY, who showed once again why he wore the crown in 2025.
Third place came down to a genuine photo finish. Jordan Dugger (Ephrata, WA) — fishing practically in his own backyard — made a massive final-hour surge, landing an 18.75-inch largemouth at 12:32 PM and later a 17.25-inch cull that pushed his total to 84.00 inches. Chris Williams matched him exactly at 84.00 with a pair of late clutch culls, submitting nine fish in total in his relentless pursuit of the perfect bag. With the tie going to the angler with the largest single fish, Jordan Dugger’s 18.75-inch anchor edged Williams’ 17.75 for the final podium spot. Williams settled for a well-earned fourth.
Brian Oles rounded out the top five at 83.00 inches, having set an early tone with that 19-inch largemouth and remaining a steady presence in contention all day. Will Raymond (Bellingham, WA) finished sixth at 81.75 inches, anchored by an 18-inch largemouth posted in the final hour to muscle his way into the top six.
Storylines Worth Noting
Andrew Larson (Donald, OR) made a strong late charge with five fish in the closing hours to claim seventh at 79.00 inches. Geoff Linson — who drew first blood at the very start of the day — finished eighth at 78.50 inches, edging Trey Potts (Dayton, WA) at the same total on the tiebreaker with his 17.75-inch big fish over Potts’ 17.00.
Last year’s Rookie of the Year, Andrew Janke (Scappoose, OR), quietly put together a solid tournament to finish 12th at 77.00 inches, tied with Rick Kelly (Grants Pass, OR) — with Kelly taking 11th on the tiebreaker via his 17.25-inch big fish over Janke’s 16.75. A sign that Janke’s rookie campaign was no fluke.
Perhaps the boldest strategy of the day belonged to Kyle Zemke (Heyburn, ID), who built his entire five-fish limit on smallmouth bass — the only angler in the top 25 to do so. It was a gutsy call at a lake known primarily for its largemouth fishery, but for Zemke, Potholes and smallmouth go hand in hand. Back in 2022, when the Native Watercraft No Limit Big Bass Power Hour made its inaugural appearance on Potholes Reservoir, Zemke won the event with an all-smallmouth bag — claiming the No Limit Championship and taking big bass honors in both Hour 1 and Hour 2. This event was held in conjunction with the Native Watercraft No Limit Big Bass Power Hour once again, with most anglers double-dipping across both competitions. If the big smallmouth were biting for Zemke on tournament day, it’s a safe bet the final results could have looked very different.
The last fish of the day was recorded by Chris Williams at 1:44 PM — fittingly, one of the most relentlessly active anglers on the leaderboard from start to finish.

Potholes Reservoir sits at 1,042 feet elevation in Grant County, about 17 miles south of Moses Lake in central Washington. At full pool it spans roughly 28,000 surface acres, though water levels fluctuate significantly throughout the season as the reservoir serves as a collection and redistribution point for the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project, formed by O’Sullivan Dam. The northern and western portions of the reservoir are defined by flooded sand dunes — a landscape carved by catastrophic Glacial Lake Missoula floods thousands of years ago — which created roughly 1,000 micro-islands and a maze of shallow channels, submerged structure, and of course, potholes. The southern end near the dam features basalt outcroppings and riprap. The reservoir is fed by Crab Creek, Lind Coulee, and the Winchester and Frenchman Hills wasteways.
Potholes offers a wide variety of cover and structure, including willow-lined islands, cattail marshes, beaver huts, sand dune faces, rocky riprap, and flooded timber. The dunes vary in depth from just a few inches to around 30 feet. Fish species in the reservoir include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, walleye, rainbow trout, lake whitefish, black crappie, yellow perch, bluegill, and common carp. Rainbow trout are stocked through a cooperative net pen program between WDFW and MarDon Resort. Largemouth bass over 9 lbs have been reported, and Bassmaster Magazine has ranked Potholes among the top bass fishing destinations in the western United States.
Boundaries for this event feature approximately 4,900 acres of water and over 30 miles of shoreline.
Last time we visited Potholes: October 10-11, 2025

This is our first Tour Event ever on Potholes but we did host the Native Watercraft No Limit Big Bass Power Hour here back in 2022. We also held last year’s KFNW Kayak Bass Classic at Potholes, when it was a VERY different body of water than it will be for Tour Event 1, but let’s take a look.
We had 21 anglers and 325 fish were submitted. Dan Walker (Seattle, WA) took first place with 177.75 inches of all largemouth, including a 20.25 inch kicker. 2025 AOY Brandon Hua (Hillsboro, OR) took second place with 172.75 inches of all largemouth and a 18.75 inch kicker. Shaun Soule (Yelm, WA) took third place with 172 inches of both species, ,including a 20.5 inch kicker that was Big Bass of the tournament.

All cabins have ample parking for boats and additional vehicles if applicable. Our current rates for RV sites are $65, we’d love to extend a $50/night stay to participants and friends and family.
